I Become the Thorn

2023 stoneware clay Exhibition view at One Day I Walked Into a Memory, Athens, GR.

Tryferakanthos, a ceramic sculpture, draws its inspiration from scientific illustrations of plants and animals from the 18th and 19th centuries. The detailed drawings of these lifeforms unveil a microcosm imperceptible to the human eye. When observed through a zoom lens, the intricate textures and forms lose their initial recognizability, revealing an alien dimension within the familiar organic form. Informed by these structures, I used clay to create my own obscure organism, with the repetition of the thorn as a symbol representing something hard and painful yet simultaneously soft and skin-like through its coloration.

Artwork is currently available to located in Athens, GR.
